As things are returning to normal (ish) and I’m switching my focus back to the work on my bench I wanted to take a minute to thank one person in particular for making this possible. I say “this” meaning #CypopForTots (she’s been there since the first one) but also in a much larger sense. (Spoiler alert: It’s long!) … @madsterful is not only in charge of many of our day to day operations. Things like apparel and merch, newsletter copy and photography, shipping, customer service and travel plans. Maddie is also the number 1 grounding force in my life. I know my limitations (there are a lot) And Maddie does an amazing job of keeping me balanced and presenting a counterpoint to my often all or nothing, slightly manic creative plans, processes and general weirdness. … Add to this the fact that she is the primary caregiver for our little dude and also just took over the creative direction and content creation of the @brnly_brand page and you start to get the picture. I work hard and I’m proud of what I do but in a lot of ways Maddie is much much tougher than I am. Working with a partner can be incredibly difficult (read I’m difficult😆) but also incredibly rewarding… At this point I literally can’t imaging doing this without you and look forward to seeing what we can build together. @madsterful thank you for all of your patience, perspective and persistence. I’m having a seriously hard time keeping up lol!! Our last Local shop was at @pumphousesurf in Orleans. Not only did they give us killer prices on a bunch (Like all of them… 😆) of high quality skateboards and soft top surfboards but they are also awesome humans. (Win win) … Moving to a new place can be pretty rough when you have a business and a new baby. Matt and Jamie were some of the first people I met when I saw the sign in their shop for their Cove trolls group paddles. These are the kind of things that has started making the cape feel like home. … @pumphousematty has even been taking me out surfing on days he doesn’t think I’ll drown…🥴🥶 I’m proud to call them friends and look forward to working with them on some of their community efforts in the future. Well, this pretty much sums up my day. Awesome getting to spend some time with our first responders and seeing how much stuff a bus and Toys For Tots means to them. Super grateful that they let me tag along for the ride. Running a day behind!! (But thankfully not a dollar short 👊🏻) yesterday we hit @redballoontoyshop in Orleans and had a blast! It’s great to be able to go to a toy shop that still feels like a toy shop. … I was talking with Paul as we were checking out and he mentioned that they had been around over 40 years. To be able to compete with online retailers in a fairly cut throat industry is impressive to say the least and more importantly shows that you are doing a lot of things right. Since the beginning of C4T we’ve always tried to spend a portion of the money at a local level. It’s not always easy, buying local is often times more expensive. That said it’s also at a human scale, when I talked with Barry @orleanscycle about the project he worked with us to get much higher quality bikes than we would have been able to afford, at the same prices we’ve paid for much lower quality in the past. Bikes are just like tools, buy quality and it lasts. When Toys For Tots receives bikes it’s a big deal, due to the limited availability candidates are often hand picked from their communities based on need.
